Even Guttman isn't confident.  Things get difficult when it turns out no one has a good word for the dead man, and Guttman finds he has a long list of suspects to deal with, including a corporation president whose private life isn't as private as he'd like it; a jealous co-worker, passed over for promotion; an ex-husband who is still carrying a torch; a widow with no reason to grieve; and an ex-girl friend with a deep-seated grudge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\r\n\r\nFortunately, Guttman has help.  Mr. Carstairs, a retired accountant, is able to uncover some financial manipulations, and Dora Kaplan, ably assisted by Agnes O'Rourke, is able to dig up some interesting personal gossip.  Guttman isn't even to find Margaret Brady a most helpful Dr. Watson, even if she was only a nurse, once.  But how does Jacob Mishkin, retired plumber, know about gamblers and mobsters?\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\r\n\r\nForget all the hep he gets, it's still up to Max Guttman to find a killer.
