An American executive in Siberia is murdered. A few days later, at a glittering Washington party, ex-CIA agent John Lock celebrates his sister Beth's birthday. By the next morning, Beth and her husband, Billy Grainger, an important player in the new Russian economy, will also have been murdered.

Driven by an overpowering desire for revenge, Lock uncovers the links between Beth's murder and that of the executive in Siberia. But, as he moves toward the heart of darkness, he finds himself forced to confront the power, corruption, and ruthlessness of the Russian mafia--his only ally being the cynical, endangered policeman, Alexei Vorontsyev.
