Description for BEATING THE ODDS: OVERCOMING LIFE'S TRIALS by Frank Minirth, Ike Minirth, with Georgia Minirth Beach and Mary Alice Minirth:

Why do Christians have trials? Why do I have Trials? Am I suffering because of God's Discipline?

There are no pat, neat answers to these heart-rending questions. Sometimes we are allowed to understand why we have trials, but most of the time, with the apostle Paul, we "see through a glass darkly." Frank Minirth, psychiatrist and author, goes on to say that it is sufficient to know God is there, God is in control, and God does care.

The book begins with the story, set in gentler days, of Ike Minirth, Frank's father. Ike is a born storyteller and his daughter Georgia loses none of the flavor and colar as she recounts his life.

Frank Minirth was a homely boy, and the smallest in the class. He was also a diabetic, so unlike the other kids, he couldn't eat sweets. He also had dyslexia and it quickly becomes apparent that Frank's struggles against seemingly overwhelming odds took an unusual amount of courage and commitment.

Mary Alice Minirth, Frank's wife, details the trials of a young wife who suffers three miscarriages in a two-year period and despairs of ever bearing a child.

The book closes with a discussion of suffering and offers principles for overcoming the odds. Readers are then pointed to some favorite hymns, the lines of which contain simple yet profound messages of love, hope, and comfort in trials.
