The lieutenant had done it to Mike again, stuck him with one of those impossible cases. Probably a suicide or an accident. The investigation could take forever, none of the findings would be conclusive, and in the meantime he would be stuck with a weirdo or two to hinder progress. Perfect for the "hotshot kid" from the big city.
"The impossible case" was the death of beautiful Colleen Blakely, a university graduate student, whose badly decomposed body was discovered in the basement of the Art History building. it didn't take long for Sergeant Mike Minor to realize that her death was not suicide or an accident but murder. The rest of his prophesy, however, turned out to be quite accurate.
Mike Minor had left a city police force for the more livable college town environment, bringing with him a reputation for investigative skill at solving homicides. As he begins his investigation into Colleen Blakely's murder, he finds that he is learning a lot about art, but little about who killed the art student. Only one thing is clear: colleen had been popular and outgoing until some months before when her personality had inexplicably changed. She had become defensive, vindictive, and promiscuous, had left her Air Force officer husband, and alienated her professors and fellow students. Many of them had serious grievances against her. Mike's "impossible" job is to find out which one of them was serious enough for murder.
