Description for HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE AND BABY BUNTING by Randolph Caldecott:
The son of a Chester shopkeeper, Randolph Caldecott left his chosen trade as a bank clerk in Manchester (he called this work :quill driving") to use his pen to better effect in the competitive world of book and magazine illustration. With a useful introduction to the artistic circles of du Maurier and Whistler, he was able to carve a successful career, which resulted in some of the most outstanding childrens book illustration of any period. A contemporary of Walter Crane and Kate Greenaway, he was eventually adopted by Edmund Evans, the London printer who had done so much to promote the early work of these two himself.
