From the time Soaring Hawk diagnoses his sister's illness as an infestation of angry fish-spirits, we enter another reality---the reality of the ancient world of the Cherokee Indians.
Young Soaring Hawk, an apprentice medicine man to his powerful uncle, Fighting Bear, is confident of his abilities, but Redbird's illness changes suddenly and conjury is suspected. Soaring Hawk blames Scratcher, Fighting Bear's arch rival. Drawn into a desperate battle for mystical power, the young medicine man knows that Redbird will die if his enemy prevails.
At soaring Hawk's side as he conjures against Scratcher is Owl, a man of mysterious ways and awesome knowledge and power, and Chestnut Bread, Scratcher's "daughter." Her devotion to her friend Redbird, and her growing love for Soaring Hawk, leads her to defy the ways of her people. She is scorned by those around her, but stands firmly with Soaring Hawk and his family against the terror of evil forces.
