Maggie Ryan, amateur sleuth and mother-to-be, and her actor husband Nick O'Connor have found the upwardly mobile couple's dream: an affordable vintage brownstone in an up-and-coming neighborhood in New York City. It's just about perfect. Except for a few minor problems.

Batty old Mrs. Northrup in the basement could be difficult. Still, they'll get along with her---although she does have some disturbing habits.

The place is crying out for some fresh paint, and they'll have to fix the creaky staircase and the ancient dumbwaiter.
