THE INSTITUTE

Lavishly funded and shrouded in secrecy, the Institute explored the fundamental questions of life and death, probing the basics of the universe.  The answers it found were astounding...terrifying.

THE MACHINE

A by-product of the Institute's research, the Biotron 8000 was a medical marvel and a moral disaster.  It could keep a patient alive indefinitely---forever, if the Institute commanded.

THE PATIENT

Ernest Freeman was a relic of the past.  As the Institute's oldest patient, he was little more than a laboratory animal---closely guarded and tended with icy efficiency.  But he wanted desperately to die, to escape the Institute's total control.

Only his granddaughter, Katherine, could help him.  But she was one woman against the most powerful medical monolith the world had ever seen.  And it was primed to defend itself at any cost.
