Somebody Help Me

With a sigh, Laurie opened her math book and looked at the first problems. As she stared at the numbers in their neat rows, suddenly they seemed to go in and out of focus. Frowning, she squinted hard. Bur her head felt strange---there was a muffled roaring in her ears. For a moment she felt as if a giant fishbowl had been inverted over her head, skewing her vision. And then she heard again the voice that had cried out during the night. "Please, help me!"

Laurie's head jerked up and she looked around in a panic. No one else seemed to have heard anything---the heads of her classmates were bent over their books. Involuntarily she turned toward the windows at the back of the classroom. Could a child be outside? But no, if a child were crying out there, Laurie would still be hearing him.

With heavy certainty Laurie knew it was the same voice that had awakened her the night before. And she was still convinced it wasn't something she had imagined---it was too real for that. Yet could it be real?
