Description for THE AMERICAN HEIRESS by Daisy Goodwin:

Be careful what you wish for. Traveling abroad with her mother at the turn of the twentieth century to seek a titled husband, beautiful, vivacious Cora Cash, whose family mansion in Newport dwarfs the Vanderbilts', suddenly finds herself Duchess of Wareham, married to Ivo, the most eligible bachelor in England. Nothing is quite as it seems, however: Ivo is withdrawn and secretive, and the English social scene is full of traps and betrayals. Money, Cora soon learns, cannot buy everything, as she must decide what is truly worth the price in her life and her marriage.

Witty, moving, and brilliantly entertaining, Cora's story marks the debut of a glorious storyteller who brings a fresh new spirit to the world of Edith Wharton and Henry James.

CONNIE'S REVEIW

I purchased this book because I had read some reviews and thought they sounded good. I had a hard time getting into this book because I really didn't like many of the characters. For such a large book, it didn't really go anywhere or skipped a lot of things that would have added to the story line. The cover is beautiful and sometimes the cover is more than the book.

The names of the characters were even strange in this book. Odo, Ivo, Cora Cash, to name a few. I am not sure what genre you would place this book in, because there was very little romance and more angst in the book than I would have liked to see. I think it is great to show the dark side of a person, but some of the reasoning should be along the way and not at the end.

For the most part it was well written, I just felt it could have been a better story. In the case of this book, more would have been better.

I am giving this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.
