Rodney Chelmarsh and his wife, Doran Fairweather, are overjoyed at the birth of their first child, Christopher, even though, now that Rodney has given up his vicarship, a baby will pose new financial burdens. The huge carved wooden cherub, bearing an eerie likeness to Christopher, that Doran just has to have a t a cost of 1200 pounds doesn't help matters much.
Rodney can't understand Doran's enchantment with it; even less can he see why other seem to want it. Badly. Like Doran's fellow antique dealer, who presses her repeatedly to sell, dropping hints of an anonymous---and rich---collector. Or the disagreeable old gentleman, Mr. Vinadas, who appears uninvited at the Chelmarsh party, and won't stir until he see the cherub. Or like the housebreaker who, when he or she can't pry the carving loose from the wall above Christopher's crib, steals the living baby instead...
The case grow curiouser and curiouser as bafflement turns to blackmail, and Doran and Rodney are ordered to hand over the carving---if they want to see Christopher alive again.
