They had a sumptuous suite, in the finest hotel in Nice. the fireplace glowed, the big bed waited. It was their wedding night, but first Robert wanted to show her the Firth jewels. Kneeling beside Lily, he opened the red leather case, revealing heaps of gold and stones, glittering in the firelight.
"Hold out your arm," he said thickly, and she stood obediently while he slipped on one magnificent piece after another. "Such a glow against flesh," Robert said, breathing heavily. "No flesh is anything until it is ... adorned."
Lily caught sight of herself in the glass -- weighed down with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds. It was then that he took her, and she felt only the pain of the stones pressed into her soft skin.
