David Hale is a young public librarian bored by life in Clearview, a small town in North Carolin. He is persuaded by Arthur Walters, one of his former college professors, to join an archaeological excavation of an Indian village site in the nearby Uwharrie Mountains.
Mysterious happenings occur shortly after the dig begins. Townspeople disappear, only to reappear and behave in a bizarre manner, several unexplained deaths plague the excavation site. Hale and Diana Walters, the professor's daughter, are drawn together romantically and by a mutual suspicion concerning the sinister events taking place.
David and diana soon learn the tragedies are somehow connect to John Wolfe Singer, an itinerant Native American Laborer. Their investigations intensify after the death of Dr. Walters, and lead them to the discovery of an old Uwharrie tribal legend of revenge directed by the spirit of a long-dead shaman.
Eventually, David and Diana, aided by Sheriff Joe Witherspoon, come to realize that Singer and the shaman are conspiring to exact a terrible revenge against the town. They race against the forces of supernatural evil that are closing in around them. Will they be able to save Clearview and its inhabitants, or share their inexorable fate?
