This discussion of the themes in Thessalonians by Leon Morris complements the F F Bruce commentary on the same books in the Word Biblical Commentary series.
Dr. Morris suggests that the significance of the books of Thessalonians is linked to their having been among the earliest of Paul's writings, thus exposing the church builder and revealing his early message to the Mediterranean world. He points out that the church at Paul's missionary activity, and therefore a special relationship developed between the church and its missionary-founder.
Thus, Dr. Morris observes, "This early letter reveals to us Paul the pastor as he deals with the problems that have arisen and strives to bring his converts the insight they need as they go forward into the largely uncharted path of Christian service."
Similarly, the author notes that while the Thessalonian letters lack "a detailed treatment of the great doctrines of the faith," the reader gains an overall perspective on the apostle's theology in that Paul "did not lack interesting topics on which to writ:; all of his writing relates in some way to his understanding of God.
